Ethiopia establishes a dedicated Artificial Intelligence university
The government of Ethiopia approved the creation of the Medemer Artificial Intelligence University in 2026, a specialized institution focused on artificial intelligence and advanced computational sciences.
The Government of Ethiopia has approved the establishment of the Medemer Artificial Intelligence University, a specialized higher education institution dedicated to artificial intelligence, data science, and advanced computational technologies. The university is expected to be based in Addis Ababa and will serve as a national hub for cutting-edge research, postgraduate training, and innovation in emerging digital fields.
The institution is aligned with Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation agenda, particularly its ambition to build a knowledge-based economy driven by technology and innovation. The university will offer advanced degree programs (MSc and PhD) in areas such as machine learning, robotics, big data analytics, cybersecurity, and intelligent systems, while also fostering interdisciplinary research that applies AI to sectors like agriculture, healthcare, finance, and urban planning.
A key feature of the university is its emphasis on innovation ecosystems. It is expected to host technology incubators, startup accelerators, and industry partnerships, enabling students and researchers to translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions and scalable enterprises. Collaboration with international research institutions and private sector players will further strengthen its capacity to contribute to global AI advancements.
In addition, the university aims to address Africa’s critical shortage of highly skilled AI professionals by producing a new generation of experts capable of solving local and regional challenges using data-driven approaches. This includes applications such as precision agriculture, disease prediction, smart infrastructure, and financial inclusion technologies.
