Major breakthrough: Large-scale malaria vaccine rollout. What is your view on this?
Super AdminApr 8, 2026Tropical Diseases
The biggest recent milestone is the transition from research to real-world deployment of malaria vaccines.
Two vaccines—RTS,S (Mosquirix) and R21/Matrix-M—are now widely used.
As of 2026, about 25 African countries (including Nigeria) have introduced malaria vaccines into routine immunisation
Over 39 million doses have already been delivered
Effectiveness:
Reduce malaria cases by >50% in the first year
Up to ~75% protection in seasonal transmission settings
Early rollout data suggest reductions in child mortality (~13%)
What’s next:
Plans to vaccinate 50 million children (2026–2030) and potentially save 170,000 lives
👉 This is widely considered the most important malaria research success in decades.
